Soma News: June 15, 2023

We, the Terry family, have been blessed with 2 weeks of enjoying time here at Soma Ranch and around Montgomery, TX, with our daughter, Liliana. After our amazing Immersive Nia Brown Belt Training experience, unwinding a little has been a delight, with activities including discovering a new Indian restaurant in our area, Liliana reuniting with lifelong friends (plus several of her “aunties”), rock climbing, feeding the fish, playing at Margaritaville, relaxing with friends, boating/surfing on Lake Conroe and hiking the National Forest.

This Saturday Natasha and Martha (2 fabulous members of our rock star teaching team) are leading a double scoop “from our expressive center to FreeDance” with the Focus Chest. Saturday 8:45am Nia 5 stages with Natasha and Special FreeDance experience with Martha at 10:00am. We hope you can experience these wonderful classes either live via zoom or through the 24HR replay.

Information is now up about our JULY 30 day challenge, the month of Sensational Movement. Remember, when you sign up before June 28th, you get to bring a Friend for FREE!

Next event coming up is the Nia White Belt training retreat in July and then our annual Blue Electric Storm retreat (like a Nia and Nature summer camp for Adults)

wishing you a great weekend

Montgomery Aquatic Race Club Summer Camp 2023

This coming week Joe and I have the honor of hosting the Montgomery Aquatic Race Club. We’re busting with joy with how this amazing group of swimmers are returning for their Summer camp 2023 at Soma Ranch, including the opportunity to share Nia in several ways (on land, in the studio and in the pool)

This was a "full circle", "living life" moment for Helen, who grew up as a competitive swimmer, trained as a PE teacher, certified as an international Nia technique trainer and created/founded Soma Ranch with her husband Joe. All of this came together as they hosted a summer camp for swimmers at Soma Ranch.....

Teaching Montgomery Aquatic Race Club swimmers about how to be somatic in the pool, how to apply the sensations of fitness into their strokes and how to be mindful as they swim in the pool and through life is a JOY!!

The coaches are incredibly creative and caring. They utilize many spaces, inside and out, around Soma Ranch, changing things up each day and coming up with unique ways to keep the campers happy and engaged. For example “Swimcampopoly” and outdoor circuit training.

They request we NOT adapt our menu too much, to allow the campers to take safe risks, experience something different, explore new tastes and healthy options. We are stunned with how much they chow down on vegetables, give new things (like quinoa, chia pudding, spearmint infused water) a go and seeing campers taking a photo of the “protein balls” with the intent to share with their parents when they go home, is the icing on the cake. We hope to make another crumble with the wonderful, massive blackberries picked from our neighbors, P6 farms. Lovely to serve fresh and VERY local produce.

They will be using our new big screen TV. Filming the swimmers underwater then, using airplay, their iPad for crystal clear images on the big screen. Coaches are able to pause images, show form in the water and swimmers are able to have an image of how they move through water.

We’re excited to see them apply what they learned in both swimming and in life.

Congratulations Nia Brown Belts

Congratulations Nia Brown Belt graduates; Amanda, Caroline, Gigi, Heather, Liz, Mary and Susan. Gratitude to repeaters Angela, Marti and Lesa. Big thank you to Peggy and Lila who attended and retreated for part of the week, enjoying meals, some blue belt session reviews and joys.

The following photos give “favorite frames” of what happens at Soma Ranch.

  • A favorite joy to witness is the life long, deep and meaningful friendships that are fostered during an immersive Nia Training retreat at Soma Ranch

  • Celebration photo on the fence at the end of a Nia 7 day training is a precious moment in time, shared with Soma Ranch and Nature in all their glory

  • As a Nia trainer, standing in the center of our circle at graduation I feel incredibly blessed and fortunate to be in the presence of such amazing humans who have been present, kind and vibrant throughout their training

  • At the Nia Brown belt the special extra photo under “The Brown Belt” tree is incredibly symbolic of growth. This was the 10th Nia Brown belt training hosted at Soma Ranch. At the first Debbie Rosas presented Helen (and Soma Ranch) with a 3 foot oak tree. The tree is now 10 times it’s size!

  • Enjoying non alcoholic sparkling cider, witnessing the bubbles, hearing the fizz, giggling out our accomplishments is a sweet part of our graduation traditions.

  • Joe is an artist with food, he provides fun visual yummy surprises at our graduation lunch. Like the Soma Ranch logo cut from a red bell pepper on top of guacamole and the Nia logo stenciled from paprika on top of home made hummus.

  • Thank you Gigi, as a regular returning helpful participant, your role as joyful photographer is much appreciated.

  • Something we LOVE about trainings and our adaptable tables in the dining hall, is the ability to all sit around the same table on the last meal. One by one we share favorite frames experienced from the Nia training week together, from life changing to laughable moments, the shares blend together into a beautiful, most touching, closing sharing circle.

Congratulations Nia Brown Belts:

  • Amanda returns to the Seattle area inspired to continue her journey with Nia. She’s booked to return for the Nia White Belt in July. “i love the serendipity of the timing, how these trainings worked out and I love learning from Helen, taking the belts at Soma Ranch, and Joe’s kindness and cooking too of course.

  • Caroline returns Ottawa Canada, ready to integrate the Nia Brown Belt principles to her life and profession as a Crystal Holistic Boutique owner. “I experienced the Nia 5 Stages with Helen 10 years ago and have had Soma Ranch on my bucket list ever since, this was a dream come true” “Thank You ALL for being such a wonderful bunch. I truly felt this to be a beautifully supportive, welcoming and nourishing group experience. I felt like I was in a cocoon of love and healing movement ❤️ Til we meet again…”

  • Heather returns to Louisville KY. She has attended Soma Ranch each year for White, Blue, 5 Stages and now Brown. She loved being in community, balancing connecting with folks around the world with precious quiet time. She enjoys having the opportunity to relax, dance and immerse in the Nia experience.

  • Angela shares “Thank you for all the wonderful memories. I enJOYed every moment of this journey together tremendously”

  • Marti traveled all the way from Africa to be with us. She shares “Thank you for all the wonderful moments and memories made. I am so grateful to each of you for making our BB experience so expansive and beautiful”

  • Susan returns to Palo Alto, CA after her second time at Soma Ranch, the first was for her Blue Belt in May, 2022. She is now ruminating about taking the Black Belt in 2024, which was not in "her realm of possibilities prior to her participation in the awesome" Brown Belt training. She is also ruminating about her "rich and multi-layered experience with a lovely group of women with whom she was inspired to continue her journey with Nia."

Congratulations Nia Brown Belts. What an honor to share this experience with you at Soma Ranch, for friendships to deepen and opportunities to open.

Dreams come true as we celebrate our 10th Nia Brown Belt Immersive Retreat here at Soma Ranch. Congratulations Nia Brown Belts! YOU inspire, support and encourage us to keep on keepin’ on at Soma Ranch.

Now, as we say in Texas “y’all come back and see us soon now, y’ah here!”

Blue Electric Storm Retreat July 24-26

Blue Electric Storm Retreat began 18 years ago as a concept.

A way to celebrate the Natural Time New Year, and many other celebrations including our NiaMoves community, with new location for our Studio and Helen becoming a Blue Belt trainer.

The first year Joe served Lunch and Dinner to 52 people for the whole weekend! We brought 13 black belts together to teach a Grande Finale Jam at the Houston Grand opera. That weekend was the beginning of the dream of manifesting Soma Ranch.

We now offer accommodation, meals, classes, a jam and LOTS of fun, in nature, on Lake Conroe, with community.

Think of this as a "Summer Camp for Nia Enthusiasts".

The bones of the chest include
the sternum, the clavicles,
the 12 pairs of ribs,
and the thoracic spine.

These bones contain
and protect the vital organs,
including the heart.
— Nia 5 Stages

The chest is one of the most important parts of the human body. It houses vital organs such as the heart and lungs, which are responsible for maintaining our life. Strong chest muscles not only enhance the overall appearance of the body but also help in maintaining good posture and improving athletic performance. In addition to physical benefits, chest exercises have been associated with improved mental health and relieving stress. Incorporating exercises that engage the chest into your workout routine can go a long way in maintaining overall health and fitness.

The chest, also known as the thorax, is a crucial part of the body’s anatomy. It includes the ribcage, sternum, and other important structures that protect and support the vital organs within.

Ribcage

The ribcage is composed of 12 pairs of ribs that form a bony arch, making up the front and sides of the chest. These ribs attach to the spine at the back and curve around to meet the sternum at the front, providing stability and protection to the lungs and heart.

Sternum

The sternum, also called the breastbone, is located at the center of the chest. It is a flat bone that connects the ribs, providing additional stability and protection to the internal organs.

Lungs

The lungs are two large, spongy organs that fill most of the chest cavity. They are responsible for respiratory function, taking in oxygen from the air and releasing carbon dioxide from the body.

Heart

The heart is a muscular organ located in the center of the chest, behind the sternum. It is responsible for pumping blood to the rest of the body and is protected by the ribcage and sternum.

Diaphragm

The diaphragm is a dome-shaped muscle that separates the chest from the abdomen. It plays an important role in breathing by contracting and relaxing to expand and contract the chest cavity, allowing air to enter and exit the lungs.

Overall, the chest anatomy is complex and vital, protecting and supporting important organs that allow for breathing and cardiovascular function.

Joys of Nia White Belt

I recently received a Facebook post from Agnes, a Nia White Belt Graduate from Hungary, who took the 7 day course, 6 years ago.

I’m deeply touched to see how fabulously Agnes has set out to share her body’s way of teaching Nia.

  • Manifesting her local community,

  • building classes,

  • developing a website,

  • sharing the joy of movement and more.

Agnes’ Facebook page is https://www.facebook.com/AccessYourBodyWithNia.

The link to her website is included below.

Here’s what Agnes shared.

“Facebook reminded me that it was 6 years ago that I received my 1st Nia belt, the white belt, from Helen Terry Seems like a lifetime ago Come a long way since then. It's been 4 years since I started this conversion. One thing is for sure I am not the same person anymore.

All the learnings, self-growing, lessons, failures and gifts of these 4 years has been intense. Being an entrepreneur and selling your service requires a radical change.

Today I congratulate myself on my perseverance and thank you for your support 🙏💕

And I got some really nice gifts tonight: proof that this community is amazing with beautiful people and touching feedback from a participant about how she feels about Nia. Makes me want to continue spreading this little known technique.

Today has been a day of tears of tiredness, frustration, pain but also joy and gratitude. It ended well: the joy of dancing, being surrounded by a wonderful community, encouragement, touching comeback. Thank you 🥰”

The knee joint is a hinge joint
designed to open and close.
It is the largest joint in the body
— Nia 5 Stages

Knees are an amazing and complex part of the human body. Our knees connect the thigh bone to the shin bone and are responsible for supporting our entire body weight during activities such as walking, running, and jumping.

Despite their strength, however, knees are also incredibly vulnerable to injury and wear and tear. Many athletes and active individuals suffer from knee injuries such as sprains, strains, and tears from overuse.

As we age, the cartilage in our knees can also start to wear down, resulting in conditions such as osteoarthritis. Despite the challenges, it's important to take care of our knees through exercise, stretching, and proper body mechanics to ensure they remain healthy and strong for years to come.

Monthly Cuppa for St Jude

Dear Megan, Chris, Cynthia, Mary, Heather, Amanda, Shelley, Caroline, Susannah, Peggy, Lesa and Liz.

Thank you for choosing to hang out after class on Monday for our “Monthly Cuppa”. (and Emily you were missed ;-)

We enjoyed a fun, moving and very entertaining conversation that weaved around many subjects, and touch on some very heart warming shares. The opportunity to connect, learn more about each other, laugh and support was much appreciated.

Super special to share our monthly get together with visiting NIa Brown Belt trainees. And fabulous to have Caroline, Megan and Shelley to attend in person (they usually attend classes on line on a very regular basis), each month they hear about the monthly cuppa and felt surreal to be attending in person.

We raised $50 for St Jude (our annual fundraising campaign)

After reading about the
monthly community cuppa,
and seeing the photos,
in the newsletter for years
I had a surreal experience,
to be attending in person

Energy Chakra CentersExploring the Energy Chakra Centers

At the core of yoga, Nia or body centered practice is the understanding of energy that flows through the body, also known as prana. This energy is said to flow through seven energy centers, or chakras, that run along the spine, each with its unique purpose and energy.

Energy chakra centers are an integral part of the human body's energy system. There are seven major chakras that run from the base of the spine to the top of the head, each with its unique energy and corresponding body systems.

The first chakra, known as the root chakra, is located at the base of the spine. It represents our sense of safety and security, grounding us to the earth. When this chakra is balanced, we feel stable and secure.

The second chakra, the sacral chakra, is located in the lower abdomen. It represents our creativity and sexuality. A balanced sacral chakra allows us to express ourselves creatively and embrace pleasure and joy.

The third chakra, known as the solar plexus chakra, is located in the upper abdomen. It represents our personal power and confidence. A balanced solar plexus chakra allows us to take action and make decisions with clarity and confidence.

The fourth chakra, the heart chakra, is located in the center of the chest. It represents love, compassion, and connection. A balanced heart chakra allows us to experience love and compassion for ourselves and others.

The fifth chakra, the throat….

In the chakra system, the solar plexus is the seat of personal power. Power is not about exerting our will over others, it is about being in complete truth with yourself.

  5. Watch as side one of the original vinyl album ends as soon as the movie changes to color when the Good Witch of the North appears. Also the first song on Side B is Money (color of ...)

  6. Notice the song “Brain Damage” plays as the Scarecrow sings “If I Only Had a Brain,” and the album ends with a heartbeat as Dorothy is feeling for the Tin Man’s heart.

We hope you’ll consider joining us for these special events. Everyone who signs up for the June 30 Day Challenge receives 50% off all special events.

I’m in LOVE with Lauren Daigle Album “Look Up Child”. Here’s a warm up I choreographed to the first track “Still Rolling Stone”.

In Nia technique we have a process of matching moves to the music. Through an 8 stage process called FreeDance, we have a systematic guided approach of dancing freely to the music to allows “clicks” to settle.

These clicks are magical moments where, from a somatic (body centered) place, movements match the music, revealed in way that feels like coming from an unknown place. These clicks don’t come from habit, mental thoughts or logic, instead they feel vibrantly “alive”, new and are habit breaking.

Dancing, and riding this Nia 8 stages process, with music like Lauren Daigle, is a most delicious journey. Her lyrics, the soul of the music, the quality, details and structure of each song all contribute to an effortless, most rewarding and enjoyable ride!

There’s also some great modern/interpretive dances out on the internet. They passionately and creatively share and communicate this soul searching music through the body in a most inspiring way. Here’s one of my favorites:

INNO is a movement experience created by Helen Terry, adapted from the Nia Routine Bloom.

An Adapted Movement experience is where Helen plays with the choreography from an Original Nia Routine (Bloom) and adapts the moves to the new music. The new music in the INNO experience is a playlist that evolved from Helen’s quest to find music for the “Return to Innocence” Archetype experience, one of the sessions/features in the Soma Ranch, Authentic Healing Retreat.

Thank you fellow Nia Teachers for your fabulous suggestions for “return to innocence” songs. I hope you like this playlist.
— Helen Terry ~ Soma Ranch

Nia teachers out there, are encouraged to replicate/play with the experience.

  1. Let the choreography from the first 2 songs of Bloom blend into the first song of “Inno”,

  2. The rest of the tunes adapt well, song for song, all the way through Warm up, Get Moving and Cool Down

  3. In the Floorplay cycle, improvise your way to stepping out ~ “take it home”!

In Nia Technique we have a wonderful system called 8BCs where we can decode music with a system of counting, noting and distinguishing patterns in the music. Here’s some examples of the bars to this movement experience.

FYI The app Helen uses to decode the song, and structure these bars, was created by her daughter, Liliana Terry. It’s an excellent brain training and music app called “Map My Song” that can be used to decode music and create “bars”.

Focus: Freedom in Movement through choice and variety.

Intent: Stimulate Body Centered Creativity

Sign up: https://www.somaranch.com/booking/challenge

Originally we called the June Challenge “FreeDance”, then we realized you might think we were FreeDancing through the entire 30 classes, which we are not! Thus the choice to tweak the name to “Freedom in Movement”. Throughout the 30 classes in June, we will be drawing from the wisdom of the 8 stages of FreeDance in the Nia technique. There will be a variety of physical, mental, emotional and spirit foci. Some classes will explore the benefits of polarity, for example bringing emotions to your motion through both acting out and the real you (not necessarily at the same time LOL)

A month to help

  • nudge you out of habit

  • feed your brain with new novel and fascinating information and experiences

  • stimulate health and well being throughout your body and life

  • authenticity ~ explore you doing what you do

  • discover your authentic, creative self

The “challenge” will provide a variety of modalities including Nia, Moving to Heal, Feldenkrais, Ageless Grace, 52 Moves, Move IT, offered by a stellar team of teachers, Helen Terry + Rock Stars and Special Guests. How to give gratitude for being able to move, feel vibrant, healthy and well, from an abundance of choice and variety.

Duality Foci will include:

tight | loose

found | lost

get it | don’t get it
