“The Twins” are back hanging out at Soma Ranch Pool.

Howdy!

Joe and I are here “out back” watching our daily evening entertainment… the twins. We occasionally see the “moma deer” however most of the time she seems to drop them off here and we get to enjoy them.

Helen is offering 2 classes Saturday morning stepping into our new, August, Journey, with the foundational BASE focus. Come enjoy a deep dive, simple Kata, experience. We hope you can join us ONLINE and/or via the 24HR replay.

As we turn the page to a new month we realize there are only 5 months left on this journey program. We hope you will consider joining us, whether it be for the first time or your are returning, we’d love to connect and move with you.

We also have big news… we are moving towards semi-retiring and at some point that includes selling Soma Ranch. We don’t know when or how yet, however we will do our best to keep you in the loop. AND we want to hear from you with regards what you would like to experience to celebrate Soma Ranch, share the memories and have a grand time. For example I was recently visiting Christina Mae Wolf and we dreamed up the idea of her visiting Soma and sharing her brilliance.

Please your knees with "The Dance"

This Saturday Soma Ranch Co-Owner, Helen Terry, is teaching both the 8:45am Nia 5 Stages class and the 10:00am class.

Introducing our foundational month, where our focus is the BASE of movement: Feet, Lower Legs, knees, thighs and all the way up to our hip socket. We will dance to a “retro classic” called “The Dance”. The music is by George Michael.

A fabulous class where we explore the knees in relationship with ankles and hip joints.

The body contains “energy gates.”
If these lock or close,
we lose energetic connection and
begin to move ourselves physically,
which feels like effort

Examples of gates are the hands, feet, eyes, mouth and knees. If we shut the energy gates from our hands, the upper body gets exhausted. If the hands are open, touching and receiving energy, we feel more energized. If we open and close our jaw and release tension we open the gates of the hips and allow more systemic, fluid movement that natural moves and flows from the ground up. If we lock our knees, our ankles, hips, lower back, spine and more can tighten up.

Kindred Spirits

Something I truly appreciate about my journey with the Nia Technique has been the many lifelong friendships that have naturally developed and been fostered along the way. Recently, Joe (my husband) and I had the wonderful opportunity to visit Christina Mae Wolf and her family. We enjoyed a lovely dinner in their home, I participated in a refreshing class experience outdoors on the lawn, and we ended the evening with lively, heartfelt conversation around an open fire. What’s not to love about such meaningful moments?

As we begin the process of selling Soma Ranch, we are thoughtfully curating classes, events, and retreats that serve our community and bring people together for connection, growth, and healing. There is a strong possibility that Christina will come visit us here at Soma Ranch. We wondered if you might be interested in attending a class (or perhaps two!), either ONLINE or in person. Every journey has its chapters—some that begin with fire and excitement, others that end with quiet grace and deep gratitude.

Today, we want to share something personal and important:


We’re in the beginning stages of selling Soma Ranch and stepping gently into a new season of semi-retirement.

This decision has not come quickly or lightly. Soma Ranch has been more than a place—it’s been a living, breathing reflection of love, healing, movement, community, and spirit. Over the years, this land and these walls have held space for transformation, laughter, rest, and renewal. We’ve welcomed guests from near and far, and every soul who has stepped foot here has become part of its story.

And now, it’s time for a new story to begin.

We are filled with hope and optimism about the possible new owners we’ve begun conversations with. These are people who understand the soul of this space and are interested in becoming ambassadors of Soma Ranch’s heart and magic, not only caretakers of the land, but stewards of its energy, purpose, and legacy.

But we’re not quite done yet.

As we navigate this transition, we’re also asking ourselves:
How can we honor this space one more time, with the people who made it what it is?

That’s why we’re currently exploring and planning a handful of special events and retreats to celebrate this final stretch. These will be intentional gatherings designed to bring closure, joy, and a sense of sacred completion to this beautiful chapter.

AUGUST: Foundational Movement Journey

Each month for 2025 we feature a New Fun Journey (See full list below).

For the month of August welcome to our focus of "BASE". The beginning of a 3 month series that takes us on a “journey through the body” with monthly foci BASE, CORE then UPPER.

Focus: Foundation, Steps & Stances

Intent: Ground, the hands that touch the earth

The August Journey “The BASE” is all about the foundation of systemic movement. Providing you with classes that provide exploration of

  1. steps, stances,

  2. how to ground our body through our feet and

  3. sense these incredible feet, sensing them as the hands that touch the earth.

Some class Foci will explore the essentials of Foundational BASE movement, for example

  • Sense the stability of your feet as the firm foundation for the mobility of your body.

  • Sense the 7,000 nerve endings in each foot like fascinating messengers who provide a wealth of fabulous information

  • Sense the 3 arches of your feet (inner, outer, transverse)

  • “Isolate to Integrate” sense the 3 part movement of your heel lead “ReLaX”

Other classes will explore duality and contrast between foundational principles, for example.

  • Steps and Stances, sense the stillness of stances and the motion of steps becoming aware of the Body’s way of simultaneous stability and mobility of the body

  • Sense how we step like “Dancing through life” and Stance like a “Living Meditation”

Time ~ a most romantic, sexy, personal movement experience

“Time” is one of the the most sexy & personal Nia experiences I’ve ever created. The lyrics are very moving, romantic and surprisingly relevant to today. This experience “Time” began to evolve 29 years ago when my daughter, Liliana, was a baby.

The Story

I can picture Liliana in my little 2 seater Honda Del Sol car, in the passenger seat, in her car seat, looking up at me! She was less than a year old.. I used to click my fingers to stop Liliana from crying. It was one of my funniest, handy little tricks, used to distract my daughter. I could craftily shift her from tears to fascination with the simple click of my fingers!

One time, driving to class, with the Lionel Richie “Time” CD playing. A few clicks stopped my screaming crying child. Liliana began to play with her fingers, mushing them together to see if she could click them like her Mommy… And there, in the moment, Liliana clicked her fingers for the first time. I remember hearing the noise, looking down, seeing her beaming face, her eyes sparkling with joy, feeling joy as she communicated so clearly “look! yes! I did it! I clicked my fingers for the first time!”

I may have forgotten (or missed) my daughters first steps, first food, first many, and yet THIS is a most remarkable & memorable moment in time, something I feel I’ll remember forever.

On arriving at the Houston YMCA, Joe and I did our usual “Tuesday night relay takeover” where he’d get off work, wait in the Y parking lot to pick up Liliana as I dashed into teach class.

I put on the CD (yes 29 years ago we played CDs for class!) and began improvising “teaching on the fly” ~ teaching and creating the moves to music as I went along. In the first song I began in a closed stance (toes together and a little space between the heals) and began clicking my fingers from side to side. The movement was an instant match to the music, something in Nia we call the “accidental click”. My moment in the car with Liliana flashed before my eyes, I felt light and a warm glow through out my body let me know YES! this is the beginning of something fabulous.

 

The Music movement clicks

Whenever possible I create movement experiences that follow the order of the tracks on the CD. Great to honor the artist and the order they choice for their collection of songs. The “Time” Nia Class playlist is an exception. Songs click better slightly shuffled. The addition of Light a Candle is the perfect ending to the experience.

Every song from the CD is utilized with the exception of “I hear your voice”. This song comes highly recommended for when you want a good cry over someone you miss. Other than that it simply feels too depressing for our heart warming, love story, Nia class experience!

Each song is both unique and very meaningful. They provide music movement clicks that guide me to a personal story. For example “To The Rhythm” includes “I don’t understand what’s going on in the world around me” this song was written 25 years ago, and yet it’s ridiculously relevant for today as it mentions “Recreating the same failures, Violence, Abuse, Murder, Injustice…….” “seems we are making the same mistakes over and over again and I don’t know why!” we go on and on!!

The classic song Lady (which out of the whole album you most likely will know) can be received as a beautiful love story, I imagine the words to be my body sharing a poem about it’s relationship with me…. A funny play with words and yet so true.

 

“we belong together”

Yes! it’s true! I’ve been in relationships with my body since before I was even born. And my body has spent more time with me than any other person on the planet!! My Body has been with me through all my times - the good, bad and ugly!! and

“you have made me such a fool”

I laugh at this line in the context of it being my body talking to me. For example, that time I was so nervous I had to keep running to the bathroom. And how about when I ate too much, drank too much, and I threw up, passed out or fell over - yes! made my body such a fool!!…

Stepping Out

Inspired by Embodiment Teacher Mark Walsh’s “Self Care Pose” YouTube clip (below), I introduced the pose into the final closure for class, to the music of “light a candle”. Gently inviting participants to caress their body, to be held, to stay a little longer when they maybe feel they want to bolt was a magical self care moment. The lyrics in the song inspired me to guide them on a mediation while they shifted and then sustained the hug on the other side of their body.

“with your head bowed, softly hold you self in your arms, breath, be gentle and surrender into peace. Feel the warmth of your body and connect with your heart. Imagine lighting a candle. This candle is being lit for peace. Sense your desire for world peace and let the movement towards peace begin at home, here in your heart. Acknowledge true peace begins at home, here in your heart. Light a candle for your own personal peace, for self love, self care and self acceptance. Sense the radiance from your heart, imagine the ripples extending from your center. From your personal act of love on the quest for peace, feel love extending like tentacles from your heart center. Recognize anything in this moment that feels better. Notice anything in your body, on your mind, in your heart, anything unique, that feels better. Feeling better is a sign of self healing, in that when we heal we feel better. As you prepare to step out from class feel free to leave behind anything that no longer serves you well on the dance floor. Choose something special to take with you from this experience. And step into your greatness today, this is your time. All we know we have is now, make it a great day”

5 more months remain on this journey

As we prepare to flip the calendar to another month, it’s difficult to believe we’ve reached this point: just five more months remain in a journey that began back in January 2021.

What started as a vision—a seed of possibility—has since grown, evolved, and blossomed into something far more beautiful than we ever imagined. This program hasn’t just filled schedules; it has filled hearts. It’s brought people together in ways that transcend distance, time zones, and even challenges we never saw coming.

Through the screen on Zoom, we saw each other’s faces—sometimes pixelated, sometimes tired, always real. In the warm, welcoming space of Soma Ranch, we moved, shared, laughed, cried, and held space for one another. Both environments have shaped the soul of this program, proving that connection knows no bounds.

We’ve seen:

  • Friendships form across continents

  • Breakthroughs born out of silence and stillness

  • Courage rise in moments of uncertainty

  • Community strengthen in the face of change

And while our hearts might tug at the thought, we know this to be true: Like all good things, this must come to an end.

But it’s not time to say goodbye just yet.
We still have five months to:

  • Soak it in

  • Finish strong

  • Celebrate the growth

  • Honor what we’ve built

  • Show up—fully and gratefully—for the final stretch

This final chapter isn’t just about closing; it’s about culmination. It’s about taking what we’ve experienced and letting it shape where we go next—together or apart, always connected by what we’ve shared here.

So here’s to the next five months. May they be intentional, rich, joyful, and real.

Let’s make them count.
Let’s savor the journey.

Flounce

 

Fondly called “Flounce” this somatic experience begins and ends with the same song. A fun and novel way to deliver an embodied class (end as we began yet sense the different). Notice how you feel in the song at the beginning of the experience, then notice how you feel at the end with the same song. Self Healing can be defined as any thing that feels better. If you notice anything feels better, recognize this as self healing and give body gratitude.

Focus: At the beginning of class we introduce the concept flow and bounce, how the body thrives on the dynamic ease. We physically get a sense of shifting our connective tissue by softly moving arms in the circle. We Step In with a question. Choose to step in with what will serve you best for class: flow or bounce.

Cycle 3 Warm Up: In the first song we play with rhythm and flow through the 13 joints, starting with one side, then the other, the whole body. The next few songs follow some choreography from the Nia Routine AO, then, as we progress the experience become more and more it’s own unique adventure. In Slave Song, the peak of Cycle 4* Get Moving*, we play with the concept of bouncing a ball like playing basketball and acting as if we have high level skills :-). The songs progressively move into flounce (a combinations of flowing and bouncing). Lovers Rock is Helen’s favorite song, rich words, music and something magical comes through from flow, bounce and flow.

At the end of class we often Step Out with a 2 question quiz:

1. what do you choose to step out with to serve you in your day best, flow or bounce?

2. what do you choose to step out with to serve you well if you can choose flow, bounce OR flounce.

Helen is in Seattle, with Joe, visiting Liliana and Carter, then heading to the cabin on Sunday.

Tomorrow is a “big experiment” day where Helen is teaching both classes (8:45 and 10:00am), ONLINE, broadcasting from Liliana’s homo. We hope you can join us for Sensuous Healing and “Flounce”, with music from Sade.

Helen is back from Budapest having had a BLAST leading her last Nia Blue Belt training with a wonderful group of women, lead by fabulous community leader and Nia Trainer, Kinga Breznia, in a beautiful studio. Helen’s adventure with Nia trainings in Budapest began 15 years ago.

Thank you to the “Soma Rock Star Team” for leading amazing classes while Helen was gone. The team exemplifies and embodies what it truly means to be part of a team, in cooperation, being collaborative, caring, creative and compassionate.

Tomorrow Helen will be leading a celebration of our June “Freedom” Journey today, Monday at 10am CT. The class is IN PERSON at Soma Ranch and ONLINE via zoom with the option of a 24HR replay,

Class theme is “Celebration Soma Hero Journey”. This 10am Dance connects with the process of moving through the archytypes of innocent, orphan, wanderer, warrior, altruist to magician. This is a process Helen has been studying for 2 decades and leading somatic retreats for the past decade. She is now is developing the concepts into 60 minute class experiences.

Celebration Soma Hero Journey

Ending our “Freedom” journey for June, Helen is guiding a special class. In 60 minutes let’s celebrate the month, and prepare for the new month/new journey, with a mini “Soma Hero's Journey”.

Enjoy moving with Freedom and Form, that weave the journey through our inner personalities of Innocent, Orphan, Wanderer, Warrior, Altruist and Magician.

The focus is “Sensational Journey” with the intent to feel integrated and inspired.

This form draws from the developmental framework of the Authentic Movement “Hero Journey” Retreats Helen has been developing over the past 10 years.

The July Journey “Sensation in Movement” is all about sizzling sensations and joy of movement. Providing you with classes that provide tastes of the flavors of fitness we often in Nia call the FAMSS; Flexibility, Agility, Mobility, Strength, Stability.

Some classes will explore the benefits of one of these sensations for example

  • Flexibility, where we will explore the sensation of energy out, like laser beams extending down and through our bones, with the intent to feel lighter and longer.

  • Strength, where we will explore the sensation of energy in, with muscles like sponges squeezing and releasing in and around our bones, with the intent to feel taller and stronger.

Other classes will explore duality and contrast between these sensations, for example.

  • Mobility and Stability, where we will explore the sensation of balanced motion through the Body’s way of simultaneous stability and mobility of the body

  • Agility and Stability, where we will explore the sensation of start and stop action in motion in relationship with the support of body and mind stability

  • Flexibility and Strength, were we will explore the duality, and motion of, movement into and away from the body

Blue Belt in Budapest June 21 - 26

Helen is leading her very last Nia Blue Belt training course in the beautiful city of Budapest from June 21 to June 26. This journey has been a truly wonderful ride filled with growth and discovery. Celebrating creativity and freedom of movement, we will focus on Muscles, specifically squeeze release , dynamic ease and how we can hydrate our tissues through systemic movement.
