Beginning with the Nia 5 Stages class, which most often is described as a luxurious healing hour of setting the focus for the 10am movement experience that follows.

Your diaphragm is a dome-shaped muscle that contracts downward,
filling your lungs with air as you inhale and relaxing upward, emptying the lungs, as you exhale.

Imagine an accordion effect, expanding not only horizontally, but also vertically and radially. The intercostal muscles of your ribs support this action.

Include all the feels

How’s your week? I've had a quite extreme "up and down" kinda week, including moments of questioning and self-doubt around teaching, including questions like

"what am I doing?”

“why am I doing this?”

“who am I?”

... yes - after 30 years I surrender to fact that this "mind/heart dance" is simply part of my pattern...

and then POOF! a fairly "dormant" participant, who returned to classes this month sent me this....

“I am so enjoying this 30 day challenge with you and others..
It was fun to re-discover Dreamwalker today with your fresh take on one of my favorites. Dreamwalker was the very first Nia routine I learned after White belt... …so richly playful.
I make as many in-person sessions as my schedule allows
and then look forward to your recordings.
😍 Thanks for making them available.

Peace and light”
— Happy 30 Day Challenge Participant

I posted this on our Nia Int’l Facebook Page and received many confirming comments of “yes me too” whether teachers have taught for 1 year, 5 or even decades, seems many of us have the same process. I loved how one teacher shared…

Yup. 🙋🏻‍♀️ I know this from all areas in my life.
I used to be more alarmed about it when I was younger, but have come to see it as a natural increase and decrease cycle necessary to include all the feels. It’s still not pleasant, but it doesn’t have to be - and it does feel like a life/death/life cycle (meaning, that once out of a “death” phase, I have more access to life again). ❤️
— Nia Teacher

and some participants from our 30 day challenge chimed in with the most encouraging notes.

Here’s an example of someone in our 30 day challenge, who enjoys the recordings, compliments our team, and shares how they enjoy how our teachers have complimentary styles.

I feel it too Helen. I have not been able to join a single live class but I have done every recording this month in the 30 day challenge. You have assembled a great group of teachers with distinctive and complements teaching styles. And I already shared how much I loved your adaptation of Deep Dive. today Dreamwalker was a blast! And the other day- the Belle Sisters song Iko Iko is one of my faves! Has so much fun. You are making an impact! Thank you for teaching through it all!
— 30 Day Challenge Participant

If you experience lows and challenging times I hope you find some inspiration in this post, how, when we reach out we can discover how we are not alone, how we belong, how by us all being honest about how the ups, the downs and ““all the feels” we can be encouraged to fully live life, and hopefully find ways to sing and dance along the way.

Go Team 2024!

This year we have had a wild and fabulous fun adventure of taking something I (Helen) did on my own for 2 years (teaching a 30 day challenge every month), into a collective exploration of team teaching. We came together not knowing each other very well and along the way some lovely friendships have evolved and deep healing has occured. There’s been nurturing, nourishment, support, encouragement, joy and a LOT of laughs along the way.

All this being said, when I sent out an initial enquiry to the team to see who would like to continue into next year, I chose to have very little expectation. My attitude was “this has been a fabulous ride and I’m not forcing anyone to keep on keeping on next year. My secret decision was the team’s response would be my message with regards whether to fold this program or develop into another year of daily classes.

Way beyond my expectation THE WHOLE TEAM responded with a resounding “Heck yes!!”. I hope you can sense my beaming smile and big chuckles as each teacher replied with YES!!

We’ll be following up with more details soon. For now I simply wanted to share the joy and how our adventure will continue into 2024, we would be delighted and feel blessed if you’d like to consider joining us.

Here’s a taste of the rest of our program for September (Still time and space to join us)

Monthly Cuppa for St Jude

Dear Jillian, Cynthia, Emily, Kay, Diana, Peggy and Susannah.

Thank you for choosing to hang out after class on Monday for our “Monthly Cuppa” and continuing our Soma Ranch 14th Birthday. We appreciate your generous donations to St Jude, today we raised $130.

Beyond the weather, which truly warranted some conversation and short venting, we enjoyed a fun, moving and very entertaining conversation that weaved around many subjects, including celebrating new vocations, report of a new natural swimming spot, experiencing death, starting up classes, the beginning stages of ending, the joys of travel AND returning home, embracing the day, request for naturopathic doctor referral and saying YES! to opportunities. The opportunity to connect, learn more about each other, laugh and support was much appreciated.

We raised $36 for St Jude (our annual fundraising campaign)

These monthly meetings are very important to me and other people in the group. I love and need the opportunity to connect and appreciate these special cuppas.

Run The Year 2024

Would you like to join me in 2024 to explore “going the distance” and giving yourself a fun long term goal/challenge?

For the past 8 years I have subscribed to this program called “Run The Year”. The RTE Challenge is an invitation to “cover” the number of miles for the year, i.e. in 2024 the challenge is to achieve 2024 miles.

There are many ways to accomplish this . You can:

  • run all the miles (what I did the first year)

  • run/walk all the miles (what I’ve done most years)

  • use all your steps/distance each day (what I did on a year I was challenged)

  • choose to share the mileage with a friend or 2! (My Mum did miles with me one year!

If you are wondering the math, let me help you… you need to average 2024/365= 5.54 miles a day.

I love the tracker app, the fun T shirts, great swag and the facebook group support.

FYI I’m not affiliated, or on commission for this. I simply love this program, connection and support. I would love to share the joy with you. Thank you Natasha Villeneuve for being with me for 2023, I’ve enjoyed checking your stats, seeing your progress and appreciated our connection.

New Nia Routine ENERGi with Simple Kata Formula Sep 7, 2023

Inspired by the Soma Ranch Teaching team, and encouraged by Nia choreographers, Dana Hood and Lise LeMoine, I'm "going public" with my process of learning a new routine.... Before I look at the choreography, or do my bars to a new routine, I LOVE to teach to the new routine playlist (unheard/unseen) to what I've coined my "simple kata formula". This is where I commit to stay with one simple movement sequence for each song, tweaking the core and upper body moves according to what I'm hearing and feeling in the music.

I'll be teaching this experience this Thursday at 10am Central Time: LIVE at Soma Ranch, also via ZOOM, with 24HR replay. You are welcome to join me. click the link to sign up for class, and you’ll receive the Zoom Link, usual class rates apply:

FOCUS: CORE listening and dancing to the music.

INTENT: enhance your physical conditioning and ENERGETic-healing by moving Your Body’s Way, sensing flow motion.

Benefits of simple kata formula

  • your body gets to settle into and taste the new Nia Routine with simple moves

  • your mind can learn new and novel information,

  • your heart may open to receive more with fascination up and frustration down

  • your spirit could be tickled and curious to experience more

Benefits of including this in learning a new Nia Routine

  • you will find natural “clicks” to the music with a relaxed thinking mind

  • you will deepen your relationship with the music

  • you will become more familiar with the music in an active joyful way

  • you will have the opportunity for at least a 2 for 1: bring variety of choreography choice to the Nia Routine experience

2023 in 2023

This past week I achieved my 1600 mile marker in paradise on St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands. I'm more on target towards running the year: 2023 miles in 2023 than ever before. (this is the 8th year I've run the year!.

This was all whilst enjoying a full 7 day PURE vacation (no work, no Nia, NO work/Nia talk, no family (though I love them....) - 100% all FUN WITH FRIENDS. (something I cannot remember experiencing in 30+ years).

This experience, time away from home, away from work has been a remarkable opportunity to reassess who I am, what I'm designed for, how to live my God given purpose with confidence, success and joy.

Watch out world I'm retuning recharged, inspired and ferociously determined to sustain this felt sense of wellness and sheer joy..... #runtheyear

Happy Friday and Happy new Month Soma Friend!

I’ml literally typing as fast as I can before jumping on a ferry boat to head home from the Virgin Islands after a fabulous week’s vacation. Thank you for all teachers “back at the ranch” (local and virtual) who lead classes: This Saturday I’m back looking forward to dancing “Queen Latifah” with CORE focus) tomorrow morning ONLINE classes in the morning

We’re in a series that takes us through BASE, CORE, UPPER. Enrollment is now open for the month of September.

We are having an incredible time in our in person and online classes, thanks to an incredible team of talented teachers. Here’s a little taste of our collaborative spirit, as Helen and Rock Star Soma Teacher, Paul Duff, enjoy a conversation reflecting where we’ve been, enjoying where we are, and celebrating what’s to look forward to.

Save the date! our 14th Soma Birthday is coming up in September, choose to attend a class, retreat and or Nia 5 Stages training. There will be cake!

Congratulations Gigi

Congratulations to Gigi on teaching her first class at Soma Ranch! Welcome to the team!! She did a fabulous job, inspiring and guiding our Soma students with grace and expertise. The community, both near and far, rallied around Gigi, providing unwavering support, praise, and encouragement.

From local residents attending her class at Soma, to virtual participants from different corners of the world, joining in via Zoom, the outpouring of love and support was truly magical. This incredible display of community spirit, beautifully reinforces the inclusive and nurturing environment that Soma Ranch fosters. Lovely to witness dancers from all over displayed on the “wall of smiles” - via our cinematic projector that shines online participants LARGE on the side wall of the studio.

Gigi's successful debut is a testament to her dedication and the incredible impact she's already making, leaving us all eagerly awaiting her future classes. Gigi plans to be teaching 1-2 times a month at Soma Ranch.

Like many of us teachers can remember and empathize, Gigi shared how much more of a workout teaching a class is compared to taking. She did an incredible job with excellent preparation, grounded delivery, great focus that was sustained through the experience, she was “tight but loose” = provided excellent choreography, with her own flair and APPEARED to be super relaxed and full of joy.

Amazing class today @Gigi Greene !
You are such a beautiful mover.

Your movement flows with such gratefulness and ease.
If I did not know it was your first class at Soma,
I would have thought you were a regular teacher.
So well done! 🥰
— Natasha Villeneuve, Fellow Soma Teacher

A lovely sign of community, care and creativity…

Gigi brought home made sour dough bread for the participants with the promise “I’ll bring Gluten free for those who prefer it next week!”.

Regular participant Cathey exclaimed “She made us bread!”

Congrats Gigi Greene.
Such delicious and easy yo follow queuing.
I find your voice very calm and soothing!!
Bravo on mastering the spaghetti
& the wall of smiles!!!
You rock! 💖
