YES Blue Monkey Friday with Helen

As part of our 30 day movement challenge, our theme for the end of the work week is “Fun Friday”. This Friday Helen Terry taught a Blue Monkey Class. This is where the participants bring the song requests, the teacher improvises the moves and together we co-create magic.

In line with our monthly focus “Yes we Can”, the songs requests were invited to be LOOSELY within the theme of Yes. We find how, by giving a focus suggestion for the music request, participation is increase, creativity explodes and, something Helen enjoys most is, we get to know more about the participants within our community.

Excellent 52 Moves Shuffle teaching

Paul Duff, teaching ONLINE from his home studio.

Big shout out to Paul Duff who taught an excellent class today. I love witnessing how his teaching style and skills have evolved over this past year.

Today Paul taught an entire class to the music of Yes! (in line with our monthly focus of "yes we can"). He used his "52 moves shuffle" format, to deliver all 52 moves (one every 30 seconds) in 30 minutes.

The shuffle component of this format means the teacher has no idea which of the 52 moves is coming up next. The spontaneous, random selection of the move (via an app on iPad) forces us to

  • create on the fly,

  • crafting how to weave the "move of the moment",

  • within the cycle the move lands on,

  • in relationship with the music.

Yes! a multi high level skill task! And the mastery trick is to be able to do craft the experience, engage and lead the class, while sustaining a Relaxed, Alert, Waiting state of being, something we fondly call "RAW" in Nia Technique.

As well as excellent execution of all the moves in relationship with the very unique music of Yes, Paul also demonstrated fabulously diverse teaching cue styles. US education, and particularly fitness instruction, can often be predominantly be “command style” communication, where the instructor tells the student what to do. Today, quite organically, Paul provided cues that included:

  • personalization

Happy Friday! AND Happy December!

November’s month’s foci of Gratitude was beyond expectations. The creativity, and BIG HEART, of our team and community, is touching. THANK YOU every body who signed up for our Thanksgiving Sunday Jam. We had 108 people register for the class!. We loved this CELEBRATION moving movement experience, with the entire teaching team collectively teaching a class online full of gratitude. The feedback and comments from participants was lovely.

Today, riding the joyful waves from our community Thanksgiving Sunday Jam, I chose to expand/extend our Jam playlist into a 60 minute experience for our 10am class. The result was grounded, expressive, joyful connection.

The participants in the room, and also “in the zoom” who dance on our “wall of smiles, enjoyed continuing our collective expression of gratitude. Our appreciation includes giving thanks for

In spired by the poem Elaine Dunphy shared yesterday the pulse of the class, choreography and community was how 80% of life (and succeeding) is simply showing up. The class wasn’t perfectly polished, I as the teacher was far from 100% prepared, participants didn’t follow/perform all the moves and yet, this is how we dance. Happy Friday!

Helen is enjoying quality time with daughter Liliana in Seattle, excited to attend the Lauren Daigle concert on Saturday with client/friend Emily Mockett; One of the great things about hosting retreats and trainings at Soma Ranch is how guests around the world can become great friends.

Joe is hosting 2 groups at Soma this weekend through AirBNB and enjoying the opportunity to be outside, tending to ranch maintenance in glorious Texas weather (we love this time of year in Texas).
