Last Day of my Last Nia White Belt

October 23 was an extraordinary and truly remarkable day for me. After leading the Nia White Belt trainings for 28 years, last Thursday marked the very final day of the last Nia White Belt training session I will ever lead. My journey over these past three decades has been an incredible ride, filled with continuous growth and countless unforgettable moments, as well as setbacks and disappointments, ecstatic highs, and profound depths of despair.

I am deeply filled with gratitude for the wonderful people I have had the privilege to meet along the way.

The important lessons I have learned through both success and challenge

The numerous opportunities I have been fortunate enough to experience, the diverse countries I have traveled to and explored.

And the many meaningful lifelong friendships that have been nurtured and fostered throughout this truly remarkable chapter of my life.

This past week I had the pleasure of co-leading (my last Nia White Belt training) with Kellie Chambers.

Mentoring Kellie Chambers has been a profound privilege, what a pleasure to guide and support this awesome human being on her journey of growth and learning.

As a mentor, witnessing the transformation and progress of someone I have invested time and energy into is immensely gratifying. The joy lies in the connection formed, as I’ve been able to share my knowledge, wisdom, and experiences, allowing my mentini to flourish and reach new heights. Our mentorship relationship has fostered a sense of fulfillment that comes from seeing someone unlock their full potential, overcome challenges, and find their own unique path.

I (Helen) am at our Hiker’s Cabin at the foothills of the Olympic National Forest, enjoying a short retreat to reflect on the

  1. past 7 days, delivering my last Nia White Belt

  2. joy of mentorship how I’ve enjoyed supporting Kellie Chambers (fellow trainer)

  3. past 6 weeks (away from Soma Ranch, being with Liliana and Carter to help support and celebrate the birth of Otto Alwyne Airhart.

  4. past 16 years of building, evolving and growing Soma Ranch

  5. last 32 years of teaching Nia, traveling around the world offering classes, workshops and trainings.

Tomorrow (Saturday), I will teach both the 5 Stages class at 8:45am, followed by 10 am movement. The 5 stages lesson is on the shoulder blade, in the 10am movement class we will continue this theme by exploring how to bring light into our movement, body and world”. That is, when you put the bone up to the light you can see light thought it. Shoulder Blade Scapula Bone

Welcome to a “scapula” Saturday feature.

In the 8:45am 5 stages class the lesson is Shoulder Blade (scapula) where we will learn more about this fascinating bone in the body through a process of look, listen, imagine. We will move through the developmental stages of embryonic, creeping, crawling, standing and walking to systemically integrate awareness, new learning and skills.

The body of the scapula (shoulder blade) is thin and translucent. This characteristic is due to the thinness of the bone, particularly in the infraspinous and supraspinous fossae, though the borders and spine are thicker.  

  • Thin and translucent body:

    The primary reason the scapula is considered translucent is that its main body is a very thin, flat plate of bone. 

  • Fossae:

    The two large depressions on the posterior surface, the supraspinous and infraspinous fossae, are where the bone is at its thinnest, making them the most translucent areas. 

  • Thicker borders:

    In contrast to the thin body, the borders of the scapula (medial, lateral, and superior) are thicker due to their function as origins and insertions for muscles.

Liliana and Carter gave birth to a baby boy 12:13am 10/8/2025, 9lbs 5oz (name to be shared soon). Both Liliana and Baby Airhart are happy, healthy and HOME!!

Medusa Movement

 

Saturday’s class has a theme of "strong back, soft front, wild heart". (Inspired by the fabulous book by Brene Brown "Braving the Wilderness"). In the 8:45am 5 stages class we explore Humerus, Awareness of the Upper Arm Bone, by paying attention to the sensation, the language of our body. We will particularly explore the sensations of expression of heart through the skin, bones and soft connective tissue of our upper arm bones.

This Nia 5 Stages class is most often is described as a luxurious healing hour of setting the focus for the 10am movement experience that follows.

The 10am class will be “Medusa”, an experience Helen Terry has created over a couple of decades. The class has a theme of "strong back, soft front, wild heart". (Inspired by Helen’s 2nd reading of the fabulous book by Brene Brown "Braving the Wilderness").  We will dance "Medusa"set to the music of Annie Lenox with guest appearances from Prince and AC/DC!

Saturday 10/04/24, Natasha leads a wonderful 5 Stages lesson about Upper Extremities, followed by Soma Ranch Owner, Helen Terry teaching the 10:00am class.

Introducing our October month, with our focus on Expression and UPPER Extremities of movement: Arms, Hands, Fingers, Expressive movement from Heart. We will focus on Upper Extremities and movement from heart, with the Simple Kata Formula (one simple, meditative, movement per song)

Big News: Expecting a Grandson

We are delighted to share our big news, and some of the motivation behind our recent shifts at Soma Ranch; We are in preparation for the special arrival of our first grandson. With the baby due any day now…

Joe and I (Helen) want to be involved and supportive as much as possible as Liliana and Carter start their family.

Our daughter and son-in-law are very happily living in Seattle. We plan to spend more time with them and to explore more of the pacific North West.

For the month of October welcome to our focus of "UPPER" (the third of a 3 month series that takes us through BASE, CORE, UPPER)

Focus: UPPER, Arms, Hands, Fingers, Expressive Movement, Movement from the heart.

The October Journey “The UPPER” is all about the expressive movement. Providing you with classes that provide exploration of

  1. Upper Extremity Moves

  2. Expressive movement

  3. Emotions in motion

Some class Foci will explore the essentials of Expressive UPPER movement, for example

  • Sense the spiraling of your 2 lower arm bones (Ulna and Radius)

  • Sense the your heart connection to your humerus (upper arm) bone

  • “Isolate to Integrate” sense the different parts of your upper extremities

Other classes will explore duality and contrast between upper principles, for example.

  • Sense your upper extremities fully moving out and returning home (“home base”)

  • Sense palms up and down, to open shoulder girdle and release rhomboid muscles

  • Sense the relationship between your hands and heart

A month to help

  • improve your competence and confidence of your upper moves

  • you understand more about the anatomy, biomechanics and structure of your Upper

Soma News

This photo was taken back in 2013 when we changed our company name from RanchONia to Soma Ranch.

Howdy!

I’m flabbergasted to realize how the last newsletter sent out was August 8! How time flies. Since then, Joe and I (Helen) remodeled a house, moved from Soma Ranch, drove 2308 miles to Seattle to leave a car with Liliana and Carter (our daughter and son-in-law), flew back to Houston, and now Helen is back in Seattle while Joe is clearing out the Soma Barn/Workshop.

Why all this change? Two big reasons:

  1. Liliana and Carter are expecting our first grandchild (due any day now)

  2. We’re getting ready to sell Soma Ranch.

Tomorrow (Saturday), Natasha will teach Nia 5 Stages "Sacrum and Coccyx," followed by Helen’s special 10 am “Soma Faith Dance.” This session focuses on moving and feeling from the lower spine, exploring meaningful and sacred movement shapes — a colorful, unique experience. Join us online and/or watch the 24-hour replay.

Soma Faith Kaleidoscope

Saturday 09/27/25 Soma Ranch Co-Owner, Helen Terry, is leading a special Soma Faith Dance at 10am Helen’s latest “creation” Kaleidoscope.

A fabulous class where we explore the relationship between the many parts of us (Body, Mind, Emotion, Spirit), with the many parts of our body (Bones, Muscles, Tendons, Ligaments, Skin) to express movement from the inside out, heart to hands, earth to heaven, with the intent to feel relaxed, expressive and fulfilled.

This movement experience is suitable for beginners and people of all different fitness backgrounds.

Each time you look at a kaleidoscope, new beautiful arrangements appear magically. This figuratively suggests that one should approach the most difficult situations in life by changing one’s attitude to the circumstances because life is truly amazing. It also means there is so much to look forward to, regardless of the worst lows you might encounter. Things fall apart sometimes, but they can always be put back together even if in a different pattern, much like the stunning art in a kaleidoscope.

Sir David Brewster, the Scottish scientist, invented this wonderful instrument in 1816 when he experimented with light polarization. He mixed up a few Greek words that meant “observer of beautiful shapes” and succinctly came up with the word “kaleidoscope”.
