Nia Mood Food ~ I have a dream!

Varied Moodswings album provides musing to fuel any emotion

Moodfood
Moodswings.
Arista Records.

There are seven wonders of the world. You are about to witness the eighth." So begins the introductory track "Throw Off the Shackles" from Moodswings's debut album Moodfood. This album is definitely something different, a combination of rap, techno, new age, and industrial. The first time I listened to the album I felt that Moodswings had answered the question of what would happen if Nine Inch Nails made a new age album.

The album's press kit aptly describes Moodfood as "aural medication for tired minds." The album is remarkable for the stylistic range of its tracks, which vary from George Winstonesque piano on "Hairy Piano" to rap/house on "Problem Solved." No matter what mood you might be in, there will be a song on this album which will heighten your happiness or alleviate your sorrow. What is similarly remarkable is that the rest of the album will sort of fade into the background, only to be noticed again when the track fits your mood.

Moodfood was conceived and written as a single piece of music incorporating many thematically linked tracks or moods. Moodswings is able to achieve this effect by blending the transitions between tracks and by having many movements within each track. These movements will pick up a riff used in an earlier track or will give hints of riffs to come.

Moodswings is the collaboration of musicians J.F.T. Hood and Grant Showbiz. Grant Showbiz was responsible for producing many albums for The Fall and Billy Bragg and has also worked as soundman and sometime producer for The Smiths. J.F.T. Hood was the drummer for The Pretenders and has also played drums on some of the last Smiths gigs. Joining Hood and Showbiz are Jeff Beck and Johnny Marr on "Skinthieves," Linda Muriel supplying vocals on "Rainsong," and Chrissie Hynde singing on the first single from the album, "Spiritual High (State of Independence) Part II." An interesting addition to the music of the album is the mixing of Martin Luther King Jr.'s speech "I Have a Dream" with drum machine, piano, effect boxes, and a synthesized chorus on "Spiritual High (Part III)."

Moodfood alleviates, combats, and sometimes evokes our "moodswings." This is essentially what the album is all about and what Moodswings feel that music should be all about. As they say, "The sections in the record stores shouldn't be dance or country or whatever - they should be cheer you up, relax you down, music for a picnic, music for a funeral, etc."

Men of Nia ~ Spirit

ALAN DAVIDSON

I fuel the tipping point of human consciousness. 3% of the world’s population is dancing around “enlightenment” as a way of being; roughly the current population of Europe. As that number grows to 6% and 7% the problems that plague humanity now will start to shift. As 10% of the world’s population evolves into full consciousness a tipping point of transformation will make life on earth a very different experience for those generations who follow us.

Nia Rising Routine
Apr
19
10:00 AM10:00

Nia Rising Routine

This Nia Experience “Rising” is adapted from the classic Nia routine "Mantra", originally designed by Carlos Aya Rosas and one of the first routines Helen learned.

Focus: Movement as mantra and a metaphor for self, community, life.

Beginning with sensing the belly (our core) notice how this “moma cell” can

  1. contract/extend,

  2. bend/lean,

  3. figure 8.

The Belly is a substance with

  1. strength (resilience),

  2. elasticity (ability to bounce back),

  3. fluidity (go with the flow).

After embodying the focus in the Belly we expand awareness to the belly of the 700 muscles in our body, then to each piece of connective tissue, the 70+ trillion cells. All the same mantra of movement.

  • We sense inward (Body, Belly, Muscles, Connective Tissue, Cell)

  • We also sense outwards (Body, Self, Others, Class, Community, Global)

Intent: From inward + outward awareness we develop a sense of inter-connection "we are one". The Mantra, the movement, our lives and community continues. This is a time for celebration. An invitation to be inspired to rise up above anything that draws us down.

  • We are strong,

  • We bounce back

  • We go with the flow

Inspiration behind the creation:

As a Christian, at Easter time, I would feel the strong desire to celebrate the resurrection of Christ. I'd also want to honor the uniqueness of everyone in class and be accepting of all religions, beliefs and faiths. Therefore coming into class with "let's all celebrate Jesus!" simply was not going to work. I felt the creative tension between my personal faith and professional responsibility and found myself jumping up and down when a fabulous solution came to me! A playlist compiled of songs to do with Rising with a focus around the concept "Rising".

I’m inspired by the words of David Foster Wallace, This Is Water

There are these two young fish swimming along and they happen to meet an older fish swimming the other way, who nods at them and says, “Morning, boys. How’s the water?”

And the two young fish swim on for a bit, and then eventually one of them looks over at the other and goes, “What the hell is water?”….

….the immediate point of the fish story is merely that the most obvious, ubiquitous, important realities are often the ones that are hardest to see and talk about.

You're invited to slow down, take time, this weekend, to be aware of the important realities around you.

Kathy’s an extremely accomplished and most delightful equestrian teacher, coach and judge.

She’s developing a fabulous intro session “All the Ride Moves” a mindful movement workshop based on the principals of Nia.

Fabulous experience for house riders, Nia lovers and beneficial for the health and daily living of people from all walks of life!

Kathy is generously offering the experience complimentary (considering it her “beta test”). All feedback is welcome. Please come!

Designed primarily for the Equestrian Athlete, this hour long session has beneficial information for the health and daily living of people from all walks of life.

We will not be riding horses, but we will be simulating the movements and rhythms used when riding with the help of music!

The Walk is four beats, the Trot is two beats, and the Canter is a three beat Waltz!

Some of the work is done standing, but much of of the session is done sitting in a chair just like being in a saddle!

Both Soma SOURCE Play and Soma SOURCE Team are fun Nia events suitable for all levels.

A great time to invite friends!!

The Nia routine SOURCE helps you engage with the most complex of the body’s five senses: eyesight.

From the moment we wake up to the time we go to bed our eyes are busy working with dark and light, taking pictures, and sending messages to our brain for analysis.

The eyes, the “windows of the soul” are our greatest resource for connecting us with the world. Like all parts of the body, if we don’t use our eyes they will become weak.

Healthy sight is sensed as seeing far and near, as having adaptable, relaxed and moist eyes, and as having the ability to blink and use your eyes for extended periods of time with little or no fatigue.

Unhealthy sight is sensed as burning, itching eyes, as blurry and/or grey vision, as teary and achy eyes, and as having a lack of visual clarity, double vision and/or eye fatigue, and is often associated with a lack of mental comprehension and poor attention.

Source Routine

Choreographers: Kelle Rae Oien, and Kevin VerEecke

Release Date: December, 2018

Focus: The focus of SOURCE is the eyes.

Intent: The intent of SOURCE is to use the eyes and eyesight to engage the spine and direct attention.

Description: The Nia routine SOURCE helps you engage with the most complex of the body’s five senses: eyesight.

Using the eyes directs and focuses attention and connects you to the environment and space around you, thereby heightening safety and function by using the eyes to engage your spine, to look and see, to move forward and back, up and down, in and out, over and under, across and behind, in a circle, and in small and big ranges of motion. Use your eyes to initiate moving in a direction, to engage the systemic movement of the spine, and to enhance your spatial awareness, and orientation of your body and its parts in space.

AfroCelt Further in Time Experience

AfroCelt Further in Time Experience

Focus: “The Core and Extremities”

Intent: To feel enhanced systemic awareness of Body, Mind and Soul!

Screen Shot 2019-02-01 at 3.20.00 PM.png

Adapted from an original Nia routine “SkyDancing” by Carlos Aya Rosas, the AfroCelt Experience leads us through a journey of discovery, with the Core and Extremities (Legs and Arms). We explore:

  • Gift of Travel ~ Legs

  • Gift of expression ~ Arms

  • Gift of connection ~ Core

With the intent to feel fully, and systemically, connected to the entire body (like connecting all the dots) by the end of class.

An Album like “Further in Time”, with a band like Afro Celt Sound System, creates a fun, fabulous and expansive sound back drop from which to choreograph moves to, the result being a magical experience. Here’s a little more about the music:

Volume 3: Further in Time by Afro Celt Sound System is funky, and fiercely fresh. With a band of 20-some-odd players, the Afro Celts push forward with unbounded energy and focus, organically driven beats, and a thoroughly joyous fusion of West African and Irish traditional music enhanced with dissonant Eastern influence, psychedelic trip-hop groove, and a monster flood of sonic waves. The resultant sound is somehow both cutting-edge futuristic and primitive in its visceral virility. Demba Barry steps up with an unexpectedly punchy African hip-hop-styled vocal on "Shadowman," "Lagan" plays out into an orchestral swan dive, and, throughout, Johnny Kalsi and Moussa Sissokho come on like gangbusters with the drums. Real World label honcho and world-music champion Peter Gabriel does a stunning turn on the eminently catchy "When You're Falling," and Robert Plant contributes a powerfully epic rock vocal on "Life Begins Again." Fine as all these moments are, the centerpiece of volume 3, where the band achieves beyond perfect synthesis, is the ecstatic groove-lock on the African acid ceilidh of "Colossus." Volume 3 is the tune-in turn-on we've been waiting for.

Take Self Responsibility for Pleasure

Screen Shot 2019-01-07 at 4.18.45 PM.png

There are so many incredible ways to empower ourselves to pleasure.

During this talk, Jenny will discuss what those ways are and what keeps us from honoring ourselves, our bodies, and our pleasure. We’ll explore and discuss why orgasm – and seeking your ultimate orgasm – just may be far more important than we think, not just for our sex lives, but for our lives in general.

She will also talk about how a well-rounded solo sex practice is vital when it comes to having a happy and healthy life – sexual and otherwise – and yet how many of us have a tendency to not give it the due it deserves. Jenny will discuss why solo sex is so important, how to incorporate it into our lives, how to give ourselves permission to minister to ourselves, and so much more.

Talk will be based on Jenny’s books, “O Wow: Discovering Your Ultimate Orgasm” (August 2015) and “The Ultimate Guide to Solo Sex” (May 2016).

COST: suggested sliding scale of $10 - $50. Pay at the door.

Jenny will also be available throughout the week for one on one sessions to give you a chance to ask her any questions you may not want to address during the group talk. It will also allow you focused time to find out more about how you can empower yourself to pleasure. Topics might including improving your sex life, jump starting your sex life, beginning or heightening your solo sex practice, and talking to your partner about sex. Come with your questions and Jenny will do her very best to answer all of them. Leave your session feeling empowered, engaged, enlightened, and energized to create the sex life – and the life - that you truly desire. (Thirty minute and Sixty minute sessions available. Prices upon request.)

JENNY BLOCK has written for a multitude of high-profile publications from Huffington Post to Playboy, and is the author of The Ultimate Guide to Solo Sex, O Wow: Discovering Your Ultimate Orgasm, and Open: Love, Sex, and Life in an Open Marriage (winner of a 2008 Lambda Literary Award). She has been featured regularly on HuffPo Live, the HuffPo Sex and Love Podcast, and is featured in HuffPo’s “The Overdue, Under-Told Story of the Clitoris” project.

  • Clytie will lead the second 45 minutes with Yoga.
  • Regular class rates apply ~ Drop in for $15 or use your punch cards (4 for $40).
  • If you need to leave at 11:00am it's a OK.
  • Stay after class for Coffee/Chai at our patio by the sauna (fondly named "the bistro").
  • we are perfecting the ultimate "Soma dirty donkey" ~ a chai coffee fusion drink experience!

When planning this "impromptu" "pop up" Nia/Yoga combo our concept was "let's keep this Simple and Casual". Basically Clytie and I will be over the moon to experience team teaching together and enjoying a cuppa after class. Anyone who shows up, well, you will be a delightful, welcomed, addition to our already off the charts experience!! There's something super pleasurable about casting a 100% guaranteed peak experience with no push to market, no pressure (or even need) to have folks show up...

Helen is teaching AO (Alpha Omega) with the music of Bob Holroyd and the focus of Stability and Mobility. Clytie then picks up the focus and weaves her magic into an all inspiring yoga experience.
