Inside Out ~ reflections of neuroscience

I’ve been waiting for the movie “Inside Out” for over a year ever since it was mentioned in one of my favorite books “Creativity Inc” (An inspirational account of the development of Pixar Animation Studios, I heard on Audible.com, with terrific tale, tools and toys inspiring great leadership + team building skills)

Today I delighted in how the movie was everything I expected and much more. I highly recommend you check it out. It was great in a 3D theatre. Here’s a link to a great article by NBC News to give you more information about it. I hope you like it as much as me.

http://www.nbcnews.com/science/weird-science/inside-out-movie-reflects-realities-fantasies-neuroscience-n378846

“The research suggests that kids in their pre-teens and early teens often experience a precipitous drop in happiness and a rise in anxiety. “It’s like the world crashes down on them,” Keltner said. The movie traces that shift, with tear-inducing as well as laugh-inducing effects.

Keltner likes how “Inside Out” shows Riley dealing with that shift. “You’re not forever held hostage by your emotions,” he observed. And he likes how the parents deal with it as well. “They embrace her change,” Keltner said. “You have to embrace that — because that’s where you have to go.”

Getting a better understanding of how the brain works, and particularly how our own emotions work, would be a dream come true for adolescents and their parents — and for neuroscientists as well.”

Buy a Castle ~ we're off to the Ranch!

Enchanted Castle Once upon a time, after 15 years of a joyful fairytale life at the Enchanted Castle, our home is listed for sale, and the Terry Family is almost 100% moved into the ranch. I continue to have hope the perfect somatic likeminded person will see the castle, come visit, and realize it’s the home of their dreams. They then step in as the next owner of this magical dwelling. And we all live happily ever after.

Enchanted Castle Patio & Pool If you are (or know) a yoga, dance, Nia, Tai Chi, Meditation teacher, or a massage therapist, chiropractor, artist, small group/church, music teacher. The Castle is a most spectacular home waiting for you. The deed restrictions fully support folks having a business in the home, the only restriction is you can’t have a sign. I’d hold classes with 12 people in the studio and each person could park close on the road and in the driveway.

Amazing Dance Studio at the Enchanted Castle

The dance studio at The Enchanted Castle lends itself to beautiful boutique studio, workshop, crafts room or what ever artistic, creative vision you have for such a magical place.

Enchanted Castle Studio Beautiful Dance Floor:
The sprung wood floor (Birch) is the most smooth, clean, inviting floor you could imagine, with ample spring to support your joints and allow for pleasurable dancing. From the outside the room looks like a chapel, from the inside it feels like a sanctuary.

Enchanted Castle Studio Crystal Window It’s a beautiful space for dancing, meeting and celebrating. We’ve enjoyed Christmas, Birthday parties, Church Small group meetings, seminars and of course regular yoga and Nia classes. One of my favorite occasions was a fine dining experience created for 12 seniors on their way to prom.

I love how the crystal windows provide light and seclusion privacy all at the same time. On sunny days the light from the crystal casts magical rainbows around the room.

Why Train with Helen at Soma Ranch

Helen has been offering Nia Trainings for 18 years. As a world class trainer, she travels around the globe, yet her favorite training facility is here in Montgomery,Texas. Where her husband Joe created the perfect environment.

Each time Helen came home from a training, she’d shared what she loved and could have been better. One day Joe shared “Hey! I’ll build you a studio…” Little did Helen know how amazingly talented Joe was, like an artist he consciously created the ultimate Nia training facility. A ranch house to sleep up to 16 participants. A Studio complete with a Birch, Sprung Wood, dance floor, beautiful windows, mirrors, tall ceilings complete with rustic tin, recess lighting, spot light for the teacher, big screen, surround sound and even a disco ball! A ranch retreat completed with hot tub, sauna, 15 acres, pond, trees, lap pool, donkeys and horses.

Thank you AirBNB

AirBNB Listings

When we’re not hosting trainings at Soma Ranch, we make the ranch available for rent to families, corporate and wellness retreats through a great service called AirBNB

It’s been going so well we recently decided to also play with offering individuals the opportunity to stay overnight at the ranch. They reserve a room at the ranch like a room at the inn, sometimes Joe and I are there, sometimes not.

We’ve loved the opportunity to get to meet folks from around the globe! This month alone we’ve enjoyed guests from Holland, Libya, Florida, Oregon, Albequeque, Austin and Nashville. Guests are on vacation, travelling through or attending conventions, weddings, funerals or family reunions in the area.

Click this link to check out more about AirBNB and if you decide to take a trip you’ll save $25 off your first visit.

Helen gave you $25 to travel

I love the AirBNB site and how lovely our photos look. Deeply appreciate the great reviews folks have written about us and their stay at Soma Ranch. Great feeling of satisfaction seeing our dreams and mission coming true.

Here’s our listings on AirBNB if you curious…

When we rent out the whole facility:

Soma Ranch ~ Retreat for 2 - 20

When we rent out individual rooms:

Soma Ranch - Feel like a rock star!

New Condo at Soma Ranch ~ comes with a truck!

Relocating from our Castle Home of 15 years to the ranch we had a problemo:

  • where to keep our personal stuff?
  • where to stay when we rent out the whole facility?
  • where to sleep when we are fully sold out on retreats and trainings?

Condo on Wheels The solution for now… buy an AWESOME RV. It’s like a one bedroom condo. And the good news is we don’t have to pay property tax!

Our fifth wheel has 3 slide outs, a fabulous living space (with TV, couch, arm chairs and even a fireplace!) Kitchen (with stove, sink, micro wave), Bathroom (with shower tall enough for 6 foot Joe to stand in!), Bedroom with Queen Bed and Large wardrobe with sliding doors, even dual air conditioning units!

Condo on Wheels Thanks to Nia Participant Donna Wilhite, a great situation where she was looking to sell and we were looking to buy. She kindly drove the RV (with partner and friend) all the way from Oklahoma to Soma Ranch! We feel super blessed :-)

iLOVE my "job" ~ day of Nia Coaching in New Jersey

Some thing I LOVE to do beyond Soma Ranch is offer Group Nia Coaching. We had a fabulous day, a group of Nia belts from those needing confidence to teach their first song through to first degree black belts looking for something more, came together so willing to listen, learn and have fun in the process.

Click to read on how the Day ended with a FABULOUS TWIST

Check out feedback received from Nia Black Belt Amy Amy Warshawsky . As a teacher trainer it doesn’t get much better than this for me.

Dear Helen and My Nia NJ Buddies,

Aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh! MMMMMmmmmmmmmm!

I have been at play for days and days since this wonderful Sunday we spent together. Helen, I must thank you, again, and again, for the wonderful, safe environment you created with us that day. I felt so at ease and open to receive any and all feedback. That is such a delightful sensation in my body and spirit. My mind and emotions completely relaxed and took on the beauty of your offerings.

For my last number of classes since the workshop, I have been playing with being “in the pocket.” That phrase holds such poignant learning for me. My students love it, too. We are more relaxed when we are with the music than when we are chasing or dashing ahead. And during those times where choreography alludes me ;-P — I pull in one of the 9 simple steps you gave us and wallah, it all goes as if according to plan. So cool.

Now, I must say that I am a little green with envy of those Nia sisters who got Simonized Nicknames! Cha Cha and Klondike, to name a few. So if you want to come back and give me a nickname, Helen, I am all in! Or I’m coming to Soma Ranch to do your special Brown Belt and picking a nickname up while I’m there. Please let me know of the dates for that training when you have them.

Hugs to All and thanks, again, for raising the bar while lowering the tension!
Amy

Terrific Twist to the end of a Fabulous Day of Coaching

A fabulous twist to the end of the day of group coaching with the Nia New Jersey Community… Upon arriving at my gate, I discovered my flight was over booked by 15! There were several families desperate to get home. I delighted in offering my seat up to the stand by line and accepted a night in a hotel, meals provided and an early flight out the following morning. There’s been times in the past when I’ve been stuck and desperate to get home and I’m sure there will be times in the future too. Felt great to pay it forward and thank you United. Also appreciate Kristie Bryant, my business partner at NiaMoves, who graciously and immediately assured me she was A OK covering my 9:15am Nia class at the studio in Houston.

Congratulations Brown Belts!

Brown Belt Grads I facilitated my first solo brown belt. It’s something I’ve been in training for over 5 years and I was delighted to finally reach this long term goal. We had great week at Soma Ranch with fabulous participants and superb weather. Dreams coming true! with Soma Ranch being a most conducive environment for learning, healing and having fun in the process.

Congratulations to Skye, Trish, Holly, Louise, Sarit, Kathryn, Anita, Tamara, David, Karen and Peggy.

Brown Belt Grads As a facilitator I think this could be the most pleasurable training I have ever experienced (took me rather by surprise considering how I often feel rather nervous, especially going into lead something for the first time!) Part of the ease came from the ability to relax my thinking mind and memory, and glide along with an amazing and beautiful power point presentation, created by Nia.

Brown Belt Grads I also was wonderfully accompanied by Nia Black Belt, Mary Linn Bergstrom, from carrying my materials and bringing me water, to sitting up late at night helping me write up my notes (and helping me LAUGH!), she was a wonderful asset to the experience.

And of course Joe, my husband, chef, support staff, encourager, rancher, Mr Fix it and so much more. Was available, present and helping throughout the entire experience. Little surprises like finding Junior Mints by my bed side table at night, helped me feel loved and cherished.

I feel super fortunate to be a Nia trainer, at what I feel is the best facility on the planet, with a most incredible exceptional man by my side. = feeling lucky :-)

My Path to Nia Brown Belt

Curious Blessings

Back in 2011, almost to the day, I stepped into my final training practicum at Nia HQ to become a Brown and Black Belt Nia trainer. Minutes later I received a call from my family, my course changed dramatically and I was taken on a fabulous Healing Energy Ride….

The year before The Terry Family had declared Mummy would travel less and stay home more, spend less and earn more, to focus on the development of our newly acquired Ranch, then Carlos Aya Rosas, co-founder of Nia, announced his retirement and the Terry family flipped a 180! I felt called to attend all trainings with Carlos until he left, this required extensive traveling, increased spending and reduced earnings. Joe and Liliana graciously supported the decision, seeing it as a wise investment and something important for me both personally and professionally.

Then here I was, in Portland, finally stepping into my final practicum with one other training trainer to become the first Brown & Black Belt Nia trainers in the world (beyond the founders) and I receive a call from Joe, my husband. (I can hear Liliana screaming in the background) “Hi Buddy, Liliana’s injured her knee at the tennis tournament, we’re on our way to the emergency room, everything’s going to be OK, stay on your course, we’ve been working together as a team towards this week for 2 years, you’re almost there, we know how important this training is, you don’t need to come home….” I had minutes to make a decision… I chose to return to Houston and grabbed the next flight back. (I think it was the same plane I had landed on!)

We discovered Liliana had ruptured her ACL, this was devastating news to my teenager with aspiring dreams of going to College on a tennis scholarship and playing at Wimbledon.

We’ve been through a curious 4 years, personally I’ve questioned a lot about myself, my ability to teach, to train, thoughts about Nia, my relationship with Nia, etc. It’s been quite dark and depressing at times. I find it curious how the knee joint represents standing up for ourselves, “making a stand”, Louise Hay shares “Knee problems represent stuboborn ego and pride. Inability to bend. Fear. Inflexibility. Won’t give in.” The healing affirmation is “Forgiveness. Understanding Compassion. I bend and flow with ease and all is well”. Both Liliana and I have “grown up” through the process of her knee healing.

The good news is today I’m so super happy with my choices. Although my family could have coped well with me staying in Portland, my actions of coming home spoke volumes, it confirmed, other than God, my family is the most important thing to me. No matter how passionate I am about my Nia practice and all the wonderful possibilities, God and family come first. My soul searching inward time, my long term stall on developing as a brown belt trainer has been humbling and healing. I’m a much more patient, open, understanding, relaxed teacher and, more important, a more compassionate human being for the experience.

I’m left with gratitude for Nia Technique, Carlos Aya Rosas and Debbie Rosas who have provided me with an opportunity to create an amazing full time livelihood for over 2 decades, supporting my family financially, for making great life long friends, sustaining a fabulous business partnership with Kristie Bryant for over a decade, co-owning NiaMoves, a world class Nia Studio full of vibrant community with fantastic teachers, and also co-owning Soma Ranch, an amazing retreat center. I’ve been able to spend more time at home, be more present to enjoy my precious daughter’s transition from highschool transition into college.

When we look at Energy (the focus of the Nia Brown Belt) Everything is matter, in some ways we can say everything matters, and these days I sit back and smile, in awareness of all that REALLY matters in life. I’ve been able to let go of a lot more of stuff which simply doesn’t matter, at least it’s not worth worrying or getting bothered about.

I invite you to ponder what matters to you? what can you let go of TODAY that really doesn’t matter in the big picture? what would you DIVE IN to if you knew you couldn’t fail? are you scared about something? play with asking what’s the worse thing that could happen? and recognize how 80% of what we worry about never happens! let your worry bucket be light and your prayer bucket full :-)

PlayList for WHY routine

i LOVE this new and improved routine.
Each song has something to do with WHY (or Y!). I giggle as I remember back to when our daughter, Liliana, was about 2 and her response to everything seemed to be “WHY” ~ we called her “Liliana Why” for about a year! This is the “Nia Routine Why”… don’t ask me why!

Family Photo My Mum and Dad live in England, in the house I grew up in. I’m here in Texas, my brother, wife and 2 daughters are in Barcelona and my sister, husband, 2 sons and 1 daughter are in Seville and beyond. As you can likely imagine (especially with grand children becoming adults, graduating, finding jobs and becoming even more dispersed) it is quite something to get our entire family together. And yet we did it! For the 3rd time EVER, we all flew in to gather at a beautiful beach house on the West Sussex Coast. When I was at college I loved to run along the sea front, looking at these houses, dreaming of some day living in one. It was quite a thrill to spend Easter weekend acting as if I did live there! and also great experience for Joe and I to be on the other side of renting out a facility! Most of all a delightful weekend to be together with family, especially to see my Mum and Dad so happy to have us all together. Memories of a life time made.

check out this GREAT beach house where we stayed.

Why Kristie is the Queen and I'm the Royal Advisor

I remember sitting across the table with Kristie and our lawyer Steven Bryant (her husband LOL) writing up the papers to incorporate NiaMoves and to enter into a business partnership. Steven shared how Kristie would be termed “President” and Helen be “Vice President”. Kristie shared how she didn’t feel comfortable with the terms, it was a precious moment, witnessing Kristie speaking up, sharing her truth and feeling a tad of tension as Steven shared “it doesn’t matter what you call yourselves, you simply need to choose something!”. I suggested “Hey! how about you are the Queen of NiaMoves and I’m the Royal Advisor” and poof! it was a click. Written into our legal binding contract, Kristie Bryant, Queen of NiaMoves and Helen Terry, Royal Advisor of NiaMoves. It’s been a fabulous journey and partnership, Thank you Kristie for all you do at NiaMoves. We wouldn’t be the same or perhaps even exist without your wonderful leadership.

Information about the interesting synchronicity between DSOTM and Oz!

1
Begin playing your version of the Wizard of Oz and be ready to start the album. Begin play on Dark Side of the Moon as soon as the lion on the MGM opening begins its roar for the third time.

2
Notice Roger Waters singing “balanced on the biggest wave” as Dorothy is balancing on the farm’s fence at her Kansas home.

3
Listen to the chimes and bells begin on the album when the Wicked Witch appears for the first time.

4
Notice “The Great Gig in the Sky” song begin to escalate as the tornado hits Dorothy’s house. Likewise, the music calms down as the scene does, when the house lands.

5
Watch as side one of the original vinyl album ends as soon as the movie changes to color when the Good Witch of the North appears.

6
Notice the song “Brain Damage” plays as the Scarecrow sings “If I Only Had a Brain,” and the album ends with a heartbeat as Dorothy is feeling for the Tin Man’s heart.
